About
Meghan Smith started Smith Law Group in the middle of a pandemic in 2020. When asked why she did it, she says “I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I represented businesses in my practice every day as a partner in a law firm and every day I thought about how I could do this myself. Instead of sitting back and continuing to admire my clients for the businesses they have built, I took a leap of faith and went out on my own. It was the best decision I have ever made.”
Now, Meghan and her team get to advise individuals and businesses in estate planning, probate, elder law, and business law matters. She works closely with her clients to tailor her advice and services to meet their goals while protecting them from future legal or financial liabilities.
Meghan has extensive experience handling commercial business transactions and refinancing, construction contracts, business formation, and contract drafting, review, and negotiation. She also negotiates purchases and sales of business assets, membership interests and stocks, prepares buy-sell agreements for business owners, provides applications for liquor permits, and assists clients in transitioning businesses to the next generation. Her skills in these transactions are enhanced by her pre-law school years as a paralegal and legal assistant and more than thirteen years of foreclosure and business litigation.
She received a BA in Business Management from Gettysburg College, then returned to the northeast to attend Western New England University School of Law, where she received her J.D.
Meghan is licensed to practice in Connecticut, North Carolina, and Tennessee, and is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar Association. In 2012, she received the Statesman Award from the Greater Hartford Jaycees for extraordinary dedication and service, and in 2020, she was honored to be named to the Hartford Business Journal’s “40 Under 40”. She was selected to the 2025 Super Lawyers list, published by Thomson Reuters.
Meghan believes in giving back, and as the proud wife of a US Navy Veteran, she volunteers her time providing pro bono legal assistance to disabled veterans. She also volunteers at her children’s school, and serves on the Standards of Title Committee.
When she is not working on her clients’ legal matters, you can find her and her husband and their daughters golfing, or otherwise enjoying being outdoors.
